Austin Entertains Recipe of the Month

Creme Brulee French Toast
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter
2 tablespoons corn syrup
8 (1-inch) sliced french bread
1 1/2 cups half-and-half
5 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon grand marnier
1/4 teaspoon salt

Heat the brown sugar, butter and corn syrup in a saucepan until blended, stirring frequently.  Pour the brown sugar mixture into a 9x13 inch baking dish.  Arrange the bread slices in a single layer over the prepared layer.

Wisk the half-and-half, eggs, vanilla, grand marnier, and salt in a bowl until blended.  Pour over the bread.  Chill, covered, for 8 to 24 hours.  Let stand until room temperature.  Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until puffed and golden brown.  Serve immediately.
