(formerly The Junior League of Austin's Hispanic Mother-Daughter Program)

Con Mi MADRE, formerly The Junior League of Austin’s Hispanic Mother-Daughter Program, was established as collaboration between The Junior League of Austin and The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work.  The purpose of the program is to increase the representation of Hispanic women in higher education by supporting girls who have the academic potential to succeed in college. Girls are recruited through teachers and school counselors at 11 middle schools and seven high schools in the Austin Independent School District (AISD). Girls enter the Program when they are in the 6th grade and are followed through to high school graduation. Many of the students will be the first in their families to attend college. To allow continued growth, the program has become an independent 501(c)(3) independent of The Junior League of Austin operating under a new governing Board of Directors. Con Mi MADRE  helps students and parents understand the benefits of academic achievement, that a college degree is an attainable goal, and the specific steps to achieve that goal. The Program begins with an emphasis on good grades, school attendance, and appropriate behavior. Once students and parents are on course academically and behaviorally, their focus narrows toward college. Students take college preparatory classes to ready them for the rigorous academic courses they will pursue. The following Program activities are offered to support these goals:
  • College Field Trips
  • Mother-Daughter Conferences
  • Campus Meetings
  • Individual and Family Counseling
  • Weekly Tutoring
  • Mentors
  • Leadership Conference
  • Community Service
  • ESL Classes
  • Parent Workshops

Con Mi MADRE has a 16-year history of success. Since the Program's inception, 75 percent of graduating seniors have gone on to college. The remaining 25 percent have chosen to work a year before going to college, enter the military, or attend a trade school. Regardless of the post-secondary path the student decides to take, the Program's long-term goal is that these students stay in school and maintain passing grades. The Program has maintained a zero percent school dropout rate among its students.
